Japan Falls Into Recession, Prime Minister Calls for Early Elections

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has had a lot more on his mind than the G20 Summit. His country slipped into an unexpected recession earlier this week.

A recession is when a country's economy shrinks instead of grows.

Japan's recession is being blamed at least partly on a recent sales tax hike. Abe is delaying any further increases in the sales tax to encourage spending and he's announced snap elections, set for next month.

This means that all 480 members of the lower parliament will have to run for their jobs again, a move that Abe hopes will put his party in the majority, and allow him to move forward with his economic plans, which he refers to as 'abenomics'.
