Happy Birthday, Beverly Cleary!

This week, one of America's most famous living authors, Beverly Cleary, celebrated a birthday. And it's a big one. The writer turned 100 years old this past Tuesday.

Even if you've never heard her name, you might be familiar with some of the characters she created. Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy; Ralph S. Mouse, the mouse with the ability to speak; and of course, Ramona Quimby and her big sister Beezus.

Although she struggled with reading as a child, Cleary eventually grew to love books and became a children's librarian in Washington state. Her first books were inspired by the kids who came into the library and had trouble finding books they could relate to.

Cleary's books have won numerous awards and sold 91 million copies and counting. Happy birthday, Beverly Cleary!
