Buckeye Beat

This segment is called Buckeye Beat... and did you happen to catch my Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday as they beat that team up north? Another win against our arch nemesis, Michigan!

But there's also another team in Columbus making a championship run...

The Columbus Crew, Ohio's professional soccer team, will play in the Major League Soccer finals on Sunday - their second ever appearance. The Crew won the cup in 2008. They'll take on the Portland Timbers Sunday in Columbus, where a winner will be crowned. And it will be a full house for the event. The crew announced on Monday that the stadium was sold out for the game.

They add a little beauty to our state in the spring and summer months, and now federal officials are stepping up to boost the population of monarch butterflies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is due to spend $4 million next year to help farmers and others plant milkweed and other nectar-producing plants.

Each spring, millions of orange and black monarch butterflies leave their winter habitat in Mexico and fly hundreds or even thousands of miles north. Many journey all the way into Canada. Experts say some of these insects will cut their trip short and settle along the way if they find the right habitat… one offering plenty of milkweed for their caterpillars.

The USDA funds also will be spent in nine other states.

Here in Ohio, we're not only looking to attract butterflies. Tourism officials recently released the state's new slogan to entice human visitors as well.

The new slogan 'Ohio: find it here' will be the focus of a big advertising campaign next year. Officials say 'find it here' points to the many hidden gems that one can find in the buckeye state, from our great roller coasters to museums to even our sports history.

The orangish-yellow and dark red colors were chosen to reflect the changing seasons in Ohio, in addition to some other factors. Ohio's last slogan, 'So much to discover' was phased out a few years ago.

We want to know what you think. Let us know, are you a fan of the new slogan?  Do you think 'find it here' captures an accurate picture of our state? Yes or no... we'll show the results next week.
