A Plus: Summit Academy Natural Dye Tie-dye

READ THE SCRIPT:

This week’s shout out is going to the students at Summit Academy School for Alternative Learners in Warren. The high school seniors here combined sustainability, entrepreneurship and…tie-dye?

By studying environmental science, they learned to create dyes from objects in nature, many of which they harvested from their own schoolyard garden. Through a process of boiling, stirring and straining, the young creators came up with several dyes - a rich reddish-brown dye from walnut shells and a cool pink from marigolds. Plus, they used other plant parts as stencils or pressed them into fabrics.

Student, Jamie said “I think it’s cool we were able to make something beautiful…and green. I think it’s good for the environment. It encourages people to recycle.” The lesson let students see the entire process of going from a seed to a sellable product! They learned to appreciate natural resources and use them responsibly. Science teacher, Ms. Thomas hopes it will create a generation who understands the importance of nature and sustainable practices. The students plunged t-shirts into a bath of their homegrown dyes to sell online and at local stores in an effort to raise money for a senior trip to Kalahari Waterpark.

Very groovy guys! We’re psyched to give you this week’s NewsDepth A Plus.
