Jazz Roots: Jazz and the Philharmonic
With its swing beat and improvisational nature, jazz’s connection to the formal structure of classical music may be difficult to appreciate. But in the upcoming special 'Jazz Roots: Jazz and the Philharmonic,' airing on WVIZ/PBS February 28th, emerging artists and rising stars take the stage at Miami’s Arsht Center to narrow the gap.

Chanda White and the Inner City Ballet
In her career as a dancer, Chanda White has done her share of performing to jazz, classical and even hip-hop. But her journey hasn't been without a few sour notes. As a child, her interest in dancing was nearly dashed after having the door slammed in her face. Undaunted, she went on to study dance in college, and perform with several local and national companies. After settling down in Cleveland, one of her neighbors, former Councilwoman Fanny Lewis, asked Chanda to teach a dance class at a local Rec. Center - and thus began Chanda’s journey to expose children of all ages to dance through Cleveland's Inner City Ballet.

360 Degrees of Sight and Sound: The Planetarium Project
Northeast Ohio’s burgeoning film industry is expanding to University Circle! Production recently wrapped up on five short films that are set to debut on the big round screen at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Planetarium. The production is actually a collaboration between CMNH, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. It pairs student musicians and animators to create original scores accompanied by graphic animation. The program, '360 Degrees of Sight and Sound: The Planetarium Project,' screens February 25th.

Applause America: Shelia Elias - The Accidental Artist
You might call Shelia Elias an accidental artist. One day, after having trouble with her iPad, she stopped by an Apple Store for help. The doodles on the screen caught the attention of the staff and the images, along with her career, wound up going viral. Her story from our PBS affiliate in Miami for this edition of Applause America.
