The year 2021 is certainly history in the making. Whether looking for escape or guidance, the momentous events of the present naturally draw attention to historical events of the past. From drama masks inspired by ancient Greece to a documentary on the 1992 L.A. riots, here are five virtual opportunities in Northeast Ohio that transport you throughout history.

Cleveland Institute of Art

Cleveland Institute of Art's Cinematheque streams this year's Oscar-nominated shorts starting Friday, April 2. The "Animated," "Documentary" and "Live-Action" programs each present five nominees, many of which feature historical events like the L.A. riots and the current famine in Yemen.

Akron Symphony Orchestra

Akron Symphony Orchestra’s "Unorchestrated" podcast introduces its series "Deep River: The Legacy of the Spirituals," which discusses the importance of African American spirituals throughout history. The series' first episode, " Crossing to Freedom: The Spirituals Emerge," includes performances by the Gospel Meets Symphony Choir and streams now. 

Apollo's Fire

Apollo's Fire presents the " I ♥ Music" series, which aims to teach the history of baroque music to young students. The series' second episode discusses famous baroque composers and is available for streaming now. 

Massillon Museum

The Massillon Museum's "Do the Mu" workshop series features actor Brayden Frascone, who presents a tutorial on crafting Greek drama masks. The event premieres on social media this Saturday, April 3 at noon.

Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art presents "An Art Anthology, Chapter Two" with culinary historian Sarah Lohman. She discusses the evolution of food and culture in the Navajo Nation as part of the " Desktop Dialogue" series this Wednesday, April 7 at noon.
