Trump Controversy Used In Attacks Against Portman From Ohio Democrats

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) (Andy Chow / Statehouse Bureau)

Top Democrats in Ohio are trying to hit at U.S. Sen. Rob Portman using a controversy surrounding GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump. Statehouse reporter Andy Chow has more.

Donald Trump says the federal judge overseeing the Trump University fraud case is biased because of his Mexican heritage.

Ohio Democratic Party Chair David Pepper says Portman, who has said he’ll vote for Trump, should withdraw that support.

Pepper: “Every Republican who is falling in line behind him is embracing Trump’s ugly and divisive rhetoric and dangerous policies. That includes our own Senator Rob Portman who is twisting himself into a pretzel trying to simultaneously endorse and condemn Donald Trump.”

Portman’s spokesperson said the senator strongly disagrees with Trump on this issue and that a person’s heritage is not relevant to their job performance.
