More than 60,000 customers are without power near Dayton, after two tornados ripped through the area overnight. Ohio Task Force 1, a locally-based FEMA search-and-rescue team, has been deployed to Montgomery County. The county has opened its emergency operations center and is coordinating with the Red Cross to provide shelter for the displaced. Local hospitals say they are treating the injured but exact numbers were not available.
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is recovering after suffering a stroke on Sunday. He remains hospitalized in an intensive care unit near Detroit. In a statement, Quicken Loans CEO Jay Farner said the 57-year-old Gilbert is awake, responsive and resting comfortably. He said Gilbert wasn’t feeling well Sunday and was taken to the hospital by a family friend. He said Gilbert had a stroke while at the hospital and underwent what he called a “catheter-based procedure.”
In Dayton, 350 police officers showed up for a Ku Klux Klan rally that drew only nine Klan members. Police kept them separated from about 600 counter-demonstrators. Dayton's police chief Richard Biehl told WOIO-TV Cleveland19 that law enforcement didn't know what to expect. He said planning for the event was complicated by social media and news of multiple events planned for multiple locations. The city's rally plan will cost Dayton about $650,000 dollars.
The Indians gave up a season-high 12 runs in their 12-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. J.D. Martinez homered twice, Jackie Bradley Jr. added two RBI doubles for the Red Sox, who have won 18 of 26. Indians starter Jefry Rodriguez left after 4 1/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and six earned runs.
