Good morning, iOpeners.  It's Friday, July 15, 2019. ​

The Cleveland father of a 6-year-old boy has been charged with killing his son, the boy’s 2-year-old sister, the children’s mother and their neighbor in Slavic Village. Armond Johnson Sr. will be arraigned this morning on aggravated murder charges. Police arrested him this week on a warrant for an unrelated armed robbery earlier this year.   

Five years after Cuyahoga County took over the Euclid jail, county officials are in talks with city officials to close it. The closure would allow the county to transfer guards at the Euclid jail to the overcrowded main jail in downtown Cleveland. “We’ve had such difficulty hiring more corrections officers at the main jail,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish following a county council meeting Thursday.

Researchers say higher-than-usual rainfall this spring and record-high water levels in Lake Erie will make this year’s toxic algal bloom less severe than it could have been. It’s still expected to be “significant,” with a severity index value of 7.5.  Last year, it was 3.5.

While thousands attended MLB All-Star Game activities in Cleveland, law enforcement arrested 50 people in two undercover operations against sex crimes. Many of the suspects were from the Cleveland area.. One of the stings, called Operation Triple Play, led to the arrests of 29 people who prosecutors say were caught chatting on-line trying to arrange meetings with teens for sex.

Carlos Carrasco says he doesn’t know whether he will return to the mound this season as he seeks treatment for leukemia. The right-hander, speaking to reporters for the first time since revealing his diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia, said he’s taking it “day by day.” Doctors have cleared Carrasco to work out and throw regular bullpen sessions. He said he feels normal while he’s pitching.    

The Indians get back to work after the All-Star break tonight, going head-to-head against the A-L Central-leading Minnesota Twins. The Indians are 5 ½ games back. Mike Clevinger gets the ball for Cleveland while Kyle Gibson starts for Minnesota.
