The iOpener: Court Rejects Ohio's Request For Stay On New Map; Lorain Mayor To Resign; Indians Win

Good morning, iOpeners. It's Friday, May 10, 2019. Remember, Mother's Day is Sunday.  How about making her breakfast in bed?  Here's my go-to pancake recipe from the New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman.  It's easy, meaning less time in the kitchen for you and more time hanging out with Mom, watching "Ideas" on WVIZ/PBS at 11 a.m.

The U.S. District Court in Cincinnati has denied the state’s request to stay its order requiring lawmakers to redraw Ohio’s gerrymandered Congressional district map.  The state has until June 14 to create and approve a new map, or the court will step in and do it.  Attorney General Dave Yost had wanted to delay the order until after the U.S. Supreme Court rules on two similar gerrymandering cases, but the ACLU and others who had brought the suit argued the state was trying to "run out the clock" to draw a map in time for the 2020 presidential election. Yost said he will ask the Supreme Court to delay the district court's order.

Former workers at General Motors’ plant in Lordstown are not putting much stock in GM’s talks to sell the plant to a small electric truck startup. They say there are many unknowns, including salaries and pension benefits.  “We don’t want to say it is a bad thing that we could get 400 jobs if that is what it ends up being, but that is not what we want.  We want to continue working for General Motors,” said UAW Local 1112 president Tim O’Hara. GM employed as many as 4,500 union workers at Lordstown two years ago.

Lorain mayor Chase Ritenauer is setting aside his bid for a third term and will step down at the end of the month. The mayor, in a tweet, cited family concerns, saying his priorities have changed since his daughter’s birth three months ago. The Chronicle-Telegram is reporting that Ritenauer has accepted a job in Illinois

Cleveland’s Landmarks Commission voted down a developer’s plan to build an apartment building in Little Italy. The developer had scaled back the project from 66 units to 50, but commission members said it was still too big for the neighborhood.

The Indians beat the White Sox, and the rain, notching a 5-0 victory before umpires called the game for rain after five innings. Carlos Carrasco worked quickly, having been warned that he would likely pitch through the rain.  He allowed two hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Jordan Luplow got his first two home runs of the season, knocking solo blasts in the second and fifth inning.

Weather forecast: Showers early today before some drier air from the west moves in.  Cloudy, with a high this morning of 65, falling through the day to the high 50s.  Tonight, Cloudy, high 58.  Tomorrow, mostly sunny, high 53.  Sunday, mostly sunny and cool for Mother’s Day, high 53.
