The iOpener: Cleveland Celebrates Getting 2021 NFL Draft; Clean Energy Bill Now a Bailout

The Perry Nuclear Power Plant. [FirstEnergy]
Steam comes out of one of the two cooling towers at FirstEnergy's nuclear power plant in Perry Ohio.

Good morning, iOpeners. It's Thursday, May 23, 2019.  Start planning your excuse now to get out of work early today.  Keep reading...

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish and other officials will be in Public Square this afternoon to kick off a tailgate party in celebration of the 2021 NFL Draft coming to Cleveland.   The draft that year will coincide with the Browns’ 75 th anniversary.  The event runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. As at any proper tailgate, burgers and beer will be served.

Ohio House Republicans have stripped wind and solar energy out of their controversial “clean energy” subsidies bill, leaving the state’s nuclear and coal-fired power plants as the legislation’s sole beneficiaries. The initial version of House Bill 6 had created a $300 million fund of clean energy “credits” that were to be available to nuclear, solar, hydroelectric and wind power plants. Members of the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee reduced the subsidy fund to $190 million. Nearly all of it would go to the Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear plants. Their owner, FirstEnergy Solutions, have said they'll have to close without the financial help.

President Trump presented Ohio State University police officer Alan Horujko with a Medal of Valor for shooting and killing a knife-wielding Somali refugee in a 2016 terror attack on campus. Horujko shot the attacker after he had wounded 13 people. University officials say Horujko's actions prevented an even worse attack. Thirteen others received the medal, two posthumously. The medal is the nation's highest honor for bravery by a public safety officer.

Democrats in Ohio’s House of Representatives proposed what they’re calling “common sense” gun safety bills to address gun violence that took more lives in 2017 than car crashes. The bills are unlikely to get support from Republicans who are in the majority.

Police in Canton are asking the public for help as they investigate shootings that killed a man, injured a woman and riddled two homes with bullets. The shootings took place at four locations over the course of 10 hours. Police aren’t sure whether the shootings were related.

The A’s Frankie Montas dominated the Indians’ lineup, pitching six scoreless innings in Oakland’s 7-2 victory over the Tribe. The A’s swept the three-game series.   Jake Bauers hit a 450-foot, two-run homer to get the Indians on the board.
