Noon(ish): One Person's Handy Scooter Is Another Person's Hazard

We've all got a bag full of other plastic bags under the kitchen sink, right? Some of us have a bag full under our desks. [Gayle S. Putrich / ideastream]

The view from the Idea Center

WCPN’s winter membership drive, the last one of this decade, was a success. A flurry of contributions this morning, many from first-time members, brought us to our goal.

Thank you. Really, truly, thank you.

I can now leave the impassioned, on-air oratory to members of the House Judiciary Committee, who continue their debate today on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Hear our special coverage of what is expected to be a very long hearing on 90.3 WCPN, or watch the proceedings at ideastream.org.

I recently told you in “Noon(ish)” that I think there’s a need for better product management of Cleveland’s electric scooter and e-bike programs. I see them cast about on the city’s sidewalks.

This willy-nilly nature of scooter parking is unsightly, but for the unsighted, it can be downright dangerous.

“The scooters right now are being left just about everywhere, from in doorways, crosswalks, at the bottom of ramps,” Suzanne Turner, an advocate for the blind, told ideastream’s Taylor Haggerty. They can trip someone who doesn’t see them or block the path of someone in a wheelchair or walker who can’t easily move around them.

Cleveland’s planning commission holds a forum today at 4 p.m. on the safety concerns that dockless scooters and e-bikes pose for the differently-abled. If you go, look for Taylor. She’ll be covering the forum and bringing details to you tomorrow.

See you, bright(ish) - I'm still recovering from this cold - and early Friday morning on the radio,
Amy Eddings

The Ohio House passed a measure that would bar local officials from banning plastic bags. It goes to the Senate next. Who should get the final word on single-use plastics in your community? Call us at  (216) 916-6476, comment on our Facebook page or join the conversation in Public Square. We'll feature some of your thoughts and comments here in Noon(ish) and on Morning Edition.
