The Marysville plant was the first of Honda’s U.S. plants, and has rolled out more than 10 million vehicles since it started production in 1982. Now the company says it’s investing $23 million into manufacturing the new, dual-motor Accord Hybrid Sedan.

Honda of America spokesman Ron Lietzke says there will be some remodeling of the Marysville facility, in order to get the new vehicles out onto showroom floors by the fall.

“We’re going to be adding about 95,000 square feet to lengthen the main assembly line, and we need more space to do some subassembly of the components that go into the hybrid vehicle. We’ll also be hiring about 50 people.”

Lietzke says this expansion highlights Honda’s commitment to developing hybrid vehicles as part of meeting consumer’s expectations for more fuel efficient cars.

Honda operates four plants in Ohio, employing more than 13,000 residents.
