Detroit-Shoreway, Cudell Groups Join Forces As Northwest Neighborhoods CDC

Two community development corporations (CDCs) on Cleveland’s West Side have formally merged to better address the needs of the area.

After years of working together, members of Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO) and Cudell Improvement, Inc., voted in favor of unifying last month, becoming the Northwest Neighborhoods CDC.

A spokesperson for the freshly combined group told Ideastream Public Media residents likely won’t notice much of a change. The two corporations executed shared service agreements in 2018, and have been working together since then.

The new name and unification allows a formal continuation of that partnership, the spokesperson said.

“We are energized by this change,” Northwest Neighborhoods Executive Director Adam Stalder said in a press release. “Our organizations have worked as partners for years before this transition, so the services you receive from us will continue uninterrupted.”

Northwest Neighborhoods will now serve the Cudell, Detroit-Shoreway and Edgewater neighborhoods, according to the press release, which is home to about 27,000 residents. CDC members overwhelmingly voted in favor of the merger, which went into effect in July.

The combined CDC aims to provide opportunities for community involvement, economic development and events in the covered neighborhoods, according to the press release. Other listed goals include improving safety and housing with the help of a real estate department that develops affordable housing and mixed-use projects.

“Working as one organization will allow us to be more effective and equitable in our service,” said Patty Jurca, president of DSCDO.
