Arts and Culture Survey Results

Last month, ideastream conducted an Arts and Culture Survey as a way to check in with people about how the pandemic has affected their connections to the arts and culture community as well as where their interests lie.

Thank you to everyone who spent a few minutes with the questions and shared responses.

The survey provided insights into how ideastream’s arts and culture audience has and hasn’t connected with the local scene lately. For instance, the majority (but not all) of respondents have streamed online performances and discussions at some point during the pandemic. From written responses, ideastream also heard there is fatigue using screens, with many people working or attending school in digital settings. Many people long to be back in person for theater and live music, whether onstage or in the audience. Loss of employment in the industry has also taken a heavy toll.

The survey responses will help inform local stories from ideastream in the coming months and beyond. We appreciate the many suggestions and antidotes, which included support of the Equity In Art series, profiling artists of color working in various genres in Northeast Ohio. Expect more of these features in the near future.

The findings also show many people connect differently with ideastream’s local arts and cultural stories and programming. For instance, some people regularly watch Applause on WVIZ, while others listen to WCPN or WCLV and/or engage with our website and various social media accounts. The majority of respondents said they would subscribe to an arts and culture newsletter, something we are considering launching later this year.

The survey responses also emphasize how important arts and culture is to the community. People are passionate about local artists, organizations and the region in which we live. And so is ideastream.
