A Close-Knit Family Tries to Hold It Together

Florence Bray's family in happier times
Florence Bray's family in happier times

Crystal Dozier, was the first of the eleven women to go missing on Imperial Avenue, in 2007. Crystal’s body was discovered in the backyard of the Anthony Sowell home, buried in a same shallow grave that contained the remains of her cousin, Amelda Hunter. Between those deaths, and the passing of several other family members, earlier in the year, 2009 was a traumatic year for Crystal’s mother, Florence Bray. The recent Plain Dealer article on Anthony Sowell was spread out in front of Bray on the dining room table when ideastream’s David C. Barnett paid her a visit, Monday afternoon. David asked how she and the family were holding up.

David C. Barnett was a senior arts & culture reporter for Ideastream Public Media. He retired in October 2022.
