Rumsfeld: No Plans for Long-Term U.S. Presence in Iraq

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld rejects reports that the U.S. military plans to remain in Iraq for the long term, saying "we have no desire to be there for long periods." As the war in Iraq shifts into peacekeeping mode, the U.S. Navy and Air Force withdraw from the Persian Gulf region, while the Army and Marines remain to provide security and humanitarian assistance.
