Over 40% of physicians experience burnout — or high levels of stress, depression, and fatigue, according to a recent report from Medscape. Local hospitals have recognized this as a serious issue and, in conjunction with The Gathering Place, recently hosted a workshop for heathcare providers about ways to prevent burnout.

During the workshop, guest speaker Dr. James Gordon, psychiatrist and Executive Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, demostrated exercises like meditation and movement that can help a person to cope with issues like depression and trauma.

These kind of techniques are helpful to anyone dealing with stress, but they are especially important to those in healthcare, who see the results of things like violence, abuse, and neglect, often on a daily basis, Gordon says.

"If the people who are taking care of the patients are not taking care of themselves, the hospital is not fulfilling its full mission," Gordon said.

Through workshops like these, Gordon helps hospitals to implement everyday stress-relieving tactics into current workflows to help prevent burnout.
