More than half of kids in Cleveland live in poverty and this has ripple effects for their overall health. Poorer neighborhoods often have worse air quality and dilapidated housing stock, for instance, that can impact lung health. In a series of stories that began last week, The Plain Dealer's Brie Zeltner began exploring the connection between health and poverty. She started by profiling children with asthma and the efforts to help them. ideastream's Sarah Jane Tribble sat down with Zeltner to talk about the stories, her reporting and what we can expect from the series in the future.
We join their conversation as Zeltner explains how she found subjects for her stories.
