Speaking at the Cleveland Clinic today, Doctor Tom Frieden of the Centers for Disease Control said that the longer the outbreak goes on in West Africa, the greater probability there will be infected people traveling across the globe. He says that’s how Ebola was introduced recently in Nigeria and Senegal.

“It’s difficult in countries that both have burial practices that may spread Ebola, and don’t have standard infection control in their hospitals. It’s difficult to control. So there will be the risk of introduction in many parts of the world, and it certainly could happen in the U.S.”

The CDC Director adds that he doesn’t think there would be widespread transmission of the virus, given the difference in burial and health care practices between the U.S. and third-world nations.
