The number of Ohioans with a rare form of fungal meningitis has grown to three from one, and health officials are linking the outbreak to injections of anti-pain medicine from Massachusetts. Four Ohio clinics had used the steroid injections that are suspected of being contaminated with a fungus. In Ohio, 422 patients total were treated that way -- and now officials are waiting to see how many become infected. Dr. Ted Wymslow is head of the Ohio Department of Health. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen, Wymslow hints that the number of Ohio meningitis cases could grow higher.
The injectable steroid medicine, suspected of being tainted, has been recalled and the company making it has stopped production.
