Nutritionist Kristen Kirkpatrick had an interesting article from the Washington post to share last week about a food group I have been loath to give up: Cheese. I love cheese -- possibly even more than I love red meat - and at least as much as Wallace and Grommet love cheese. And that's saying something.
I like slices of apple and pear with brie. Dill flavored Havarti on crackers. Feta on my Greek salad. Blue cheese sprinkled over fresh warm mission figs. Pepper jack over chicken. Every flavor of goat cheese, and big slices of salty grilled halloumi, all by their lonesome selves. At any given moment my fridge is filled with cheese.
I wouldn’t quite call myself a connoisseur, but I know my way around a cheese shop. Now Americans already have a bad reputation amongst our European neighbors for our poor choices in fashion, food and presidents, but the rise in the consumption of American cheese, is simply embarrassing.
I have never been much of a fan of Cheese Whiz, Velveeta, or Kraft singles. I just can’t quite understand the appeal when there is perfectly delicious fresh mozzarella, gouda, and camembert in every supermarket.
And while I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me that this so-called-cheese is dominating the fast food breakfast menu, I seem to see the stuff more and more in places I would have thought had higher standards. And I can’t help but wonder, am I the only one who finds this disgusting?
Since starting the Lifestyle 180 program, I haven't given up cheese, but I have scaled it back - dramatically. In fact, I now even eat veggie cheese, which is something I formerly would not have touched with a 10 foot pole. As far as sliced cheeses go, they're not bad. Especially the pepper jack flavor. And, if you actually like American cheese, these will be a step up. Fais-moi confiance!
