The human Papilloma Virus is by far the most common sexually transmitted disease, infecting at least half of all sexually active men and women. But it was not until three years ago the disease became a household name. That's when the HPV vaccine, Gardisil, hit the market, igniting a wave of controversy over who exactly should be immunized. Now a second HPV vaccine is poised to be released which is likely more effective than the first when it comes to preventing cervical cancer in women. With more on these and other developments, ideastream®'s Eric Wellman spoke with Angela Townsend of the Plain Dealer.
