Tuesday Checkup: Reducing overdoses from common painkillers

A panel that's advising the Food and Drug Administration says that current dosage levels of acetaminophen are too high. Acetaminophen is a common ingredient in Tylenol and hundreds of other painkillers. The panel is recommending that the acceptable dosage be lowered significantly. In other words, the panel says that taking two extra strength Tylenol at once is too much, and could lead to liver damage in the longterm. The FDA is expected to consider the recommendation later this year. In this week's Tuesday Checkup, ideastream®'s Eric Wellman spoke with Diane Suchetka, a health reporter for the Plain Dealer.
