As politicians in our nation's capitol debate healthcare reform, a large part of the conversation is about bringing down cost. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine offers one suggestion -- cut down on hospital readmissions. The study says one in five medicare patients that's discharged from a hospital is readmitted within 30 days and it suggests many of those readmissions are preventable.
