Charter Critics Offer Praise

Steve Dyer is a former representative who now works with the liberal-leaning group Know Your Charter. He says the two plans-a House bill and Gov. John Kasich's proposal-are good but could use some tweaking.

Those tweaks follow three components Know Your Charter is recommending to focus on: the ability to close bad charter schools faster; holding charter records to the same transparency standards as other public entities; and funding charters without penalizing traditional public schools.

"I think as long as the momentum is here we might as well push for the biggest most substantive change for kids that we can," said Dyer.

Dyer adds that there's nothing in the current proposals that would be a deal breaker for his group.
