Study: Businesses Increasingly Shed Property Tax Burden

Damon Asbury with the Ohio School Board Association says a study by his organization and two others representing school leaders shows the tax burden has shifted away from businesses.

"We found that over the last decade or so that the proportion of property taxes being paid by agricultural landowners and homeowners have increased significantly while, at the same time, the business share of property taxes have declined equally dramatically," Asbury said. "And to be fair, we understand there have been other changes that have affected businesses but by and large those former businesses taxes that supported the local school districts, property taxes and tangible personal property tax have all but went away."

Asbury says this shift from businesses to homeowners will contain to make it more difficult for school districts to pass levies.
