Local Scientists Offered Free Training as Teachers

The University of Akron is looking for about 20 mid-career professionals who might want to move from the lab to the classroom.

The University's College of Education will offer free evening, weekend and online classes to working scientists and engineers. The one-year program was created to help fill Ohio's increasing need for high school science teachers. UA Professor Sanjit Zachariah says the students will be licensed and ready to teach in time for the 2009-20010 school year.

Applicants must have the necessary academic background, but Zachariah says he is looking for more.

Zachariah: "A lot of the people really have an interest in giving back, in going into a classroom. Some of it is initiated by working with their own children and of a need to find innovative ways in which to transfer knowledge."

The program is funded by a $430,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education. It begins in August.
