Sylvester Small will end his career with Akron Public Schools in July. After nearly four decades with the district -- seven years as superintendent -- he says it's time to move on.
Small counts among his successes raising test scores, and passing an income tax that secured matching state funds for several new school buildings. But, he says, funding for teachers, supplies and other operating expenses will continue to be an on-going challenge for his successor.
Sylvester Small: That's the number one thing that prevents school districts from meeting their goals and their mission is that you spend so much time trying to raise funds and adjusting your budgets by reducing your budgets, and when you reduce your budget you're reducing the people who teach your children.
Akron Public Schools have already begun a search for Small's replacement. District officials say they expect a smooth transition over the coming year. Dan Bobkoff, 90.3.
