The proposal would have banned students from bringing cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices to school. Currently, students in the Akron schools can have cell phones, but can't use them. Principals and administrators say that's too hard to enforce, so they've asked the Akron Board of Education to ban the devices completely from school grounds. This idea has troubled some parents, who say cell phones are essential to maintaining communication with their children before and after school.
Board of Education member Sheila Smith proposed the ban. She say to address parent's concerns and receive more input from school administrators in regards to enforcement, she want to take the proposal to back to committee for refinement.
The Akron Broad of Education may vote on a possible cell phone ban as soon as on January 22nd. Lisa Ann Pinkerton, 90.3.
