March 26, 2015 Cleveland, OH – Civic Commons ideastream will present SEA Change Happen, a community forum showcasing eight social enterprises that have applied innovative strategies to generate social and economic impact with a scalable and sustainable business model on Monday, April 6 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Idea Center at Playhouse Square. The eight participants will present their pitches and vie for $50,000 in grant funding.
The public is invited to attend this free social enterprise pitch event by registering at SeaChangeHappen.eventbrite.com.
SEA Change is Northeast Ohio’s new Social Enterprise Accelerator. It is a collaborative initiative that provides coaching, connections and capital to people who have big ideas to improve their community. SEA Change connects resources, funders, innovators and mentors to accelerate your idea from concept to successful social enterprise.
In its inaugural year, SEA Change selected 13 social enterprises (“participants”) out of 75 applicants to go through its six-week accelerator and 12 week pitch practice programs. Through the course of the accelerator, the participants received training on how to maximize social impact, develop a unique and compelling value proposition, assess potential customers and competitors (both in the social and commercial markets), build financial projections and create marketing and sales plans. Each participant’s work culminated in a fully written Social Enterprise Plan.
Subsequent to the accelerator process, the participants developed and practiced pitches for their social enterprises in a number of sessions where they received feedback from various nonprofit and entrepreneurial support experts.
The eight finalists chosen to present on Monday, April 6 are:
GiveNext - a mobile and online platform where donors can transact and record their charitable giving to all the causes they care about.
Honor Good Deeds – an organization that provides dynamic and engaging programming that empowers people to embrace their differences, find communities for belonging, and educate to overcome ignorance – all resulting in tolerance and acceptance of self and others.
KnotProfit - an online platform that allows engaged couples to group-fund for their wedding registry items and book their wedding vendors, all while supporting any charity of their choice.
Modern Good – a company that creates limited-edition apparel that gives back. They partner non-profit organizations with designers to create wearable charity that raises funding and brand awareness.
Neighborhood Solutions – an organization that creates farming and construction job opportunities for the developmentally disabled, the formerly incarcerated, and the homeless, to increase economic, housing, and life stability.
Rust Belt Riders - a worker-owned, bike-based organic waste removal solution that serves Cleveland’s businesses, residents, and schools, converting organic waste into nutrient rich compost in order to advance and sustain local food systems.
Tigress – an organization that empowers young women to become confident, passionate and creative changemakers through experiential entrepreneurship programs.
Upcycle Parts Shop diverts materials from the waste stream while cultivating creativity and community to show that sustainability, transformation, and beauty are within everyone’s reach.
