Good morning, iOpeners. It's Wednesday, August 7, 2019.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley’s stricken community will have a visitor Wednesday in President Donald Trump, who in the wake of two mass shootings over the weekend has made calls for unity after comments that political opponents have called divisive. White House officials said Trump’s visits to Texas and Ohio, where a combined 31 people were killed and dozens wounded in less than 24 hours, would be similar to those he’s paid to grieving communities in the past. But Whaley, a Democrat, made remarks Tuesday questioning whether the visit will help and expressed disappointment in the president’s remarks after the shootings that included an erroneous reference to Toledo instead of Dayton, and people in the city are protesting against the president's coming visit. "We don't need Donald Trump to come and share his hate here," said Julie Beall, who lives near the site of the shooting.

Gov. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) is calling for a  version of the "Red Flag Law," expanded background checks, and other gun control proposals in the wake of the mass shooting in Dayton over the weekend that left nine people dead. These proposals represent a dramatic shift in the way Ohio's state leadership has handled gun policies for most of the decade.

A Euclid police officer has been charged in a 2017 incident of punching a man during a traffic stop. Michael Amiott faces three misdemeanor charges for assault and interfering with civil rights. Euclid fired Patrolman Amiott after the incident caught on video of Amiott punching Richard Hubbard III. An arbitrator in October ruled that Euclid's mayor didn't have cause to fire Amiott, and he should be reinstated.

The federal judge overseeing thousands of opioid lawsuits appears  poised to approve a pathway for resolving local government claims against the drug industry and dividing settlement dollars nationwide. “There has to be some vehicle to resolve these lawsuits,” U.S. District Judge Dan Aaron Polster said during a Tuesday hearing in federal court in Cleveland.

The Indians and Rangers were rained out last night and will play a traditional doubleheader Wednesday starting at 1:10. Zach Plesac starts Game 1 for Cleveland, while a number of Indians relief pitchers are expected to pitch in Game 2.

Weather forecast for Cleveland: Chance of showers and thunderstorms, high 79.  Tonight, a chance of storms, low 68.  Tomorrow, afternoon showers, high 82. Friday, mostly sunny. High 79.
