The iOpener: Latest Inmate to Die in County Jail was Vet, Suffered Addiction; Indians Win

Good morning, iOpeners. It's Monday, May 13, 2019.

The family of an inmate who died last week at the Cuyahoga County jail says he was an Army National Guard veteran who was struggling with addiction.  Nicholas Colbert, 36, of Maple Heights is the first inmate to die in custody at the jail this year and the ninth since June 2018.  A county spokeswoman said he was brought into the jail Wednesday on a drug possession charge and was found unresponsive in his cell Friday afternoon.  Colbert’s death comes amid increased scrutiny at the jail following a U.S. Marshal’s report last fall that found conditions there “inhumane.”

Cleveland police are searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting early Sunday in Cleveland’s Union – Miles Park neighborhood. They say officers responded shortly after midnight yesterday to a report of a man shot on E. 114 th Street. The 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. 

In Willoughby Hills, police are investigating a fatal two-car collision early Sunday that killed one person and injured five others. Police say an alleged wrong-way driver crashed into an SUV on the I-271 Northbound bridge to I-90 West, killing one of the occupants of the SUV.  Police say they had received multiple reports of a wrong-way driver and were trying to locate the driver when the crash occurred.

Johns Hopkins University launches a new online course today that teaches strategies to prevent gun violence.  Dr. Daniel Webster, director of the university’s Center for Gun Policy and Research, said “it’s a course designed to really help people understand” what’s known about gun violence.  The six-week program is free and is open to the public.  It will be offered several times a year, with a goal of enrolling at least 20,000 annually.

The Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland A’s, 5-3, helped by Roberto Perez’ three-run homer in the sixth inning. Francisco Lindor had two hits. Jefry Rodríguez allowed three runs in six innings for his first American League win.
