Power is back on at Cleveland Hopkins airport. Some two dozen flights were delayed and three cancelled this morning when both the primary and secondary power went out at approximately 2:20 am.
At a press conference this morning, airport director Robert Kennedy explained the power loss.
“One of the energy feeds to the airport was down for routine maintenance by First Energy,” Kennedy said. “There was some event outside the airport environs that took down the secondary feed to the airport.”
A backup generator immediately restored emergency power. Kennedy said they then turned to a decommissioned electrical substation at Hopkins.
“Our electricians manually restarted that substation ... and brought the old system back online at approximately 6:20.”
Kennedy said that enabled the airport to restore power to the airfield, terminal, parking decks and roadways. He said there was no compromise to security.
Airport officials recommend travelers contact their airlines for flight status.
