Five new members are set to join Cleveland city council tonight at the body’s first meeting of the year.

Kevin Bishop will be the new councilman from Ward 2. Anthony Hairston is leaving his seat on Cuyahoga County Council to represent Cleveland’s Ward 10. They’re taking over for Zack Reed and Jeff Johnson, who lost their runs for mayor last year.

Democratic party central committee members from Hairston’s county council district will elect an interim replacement for him on that body, according to Lillian Sharpley, the executive director of the county Democratic Party.

Three new council members beat incumbents for the job: Jasmin Santana in Ward 14, Basheer Jones in Ward 7 and Joe Jones in Ward 1.

Joe Jones is beginning his second tour on city council. He resigned in 2005 after pleading guilty to federal mail fraud charges. He had his record expunged and defeated incumbent Terrell Pruitt.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for council’s regular meeting time, 7 p.m. tonight.
