During election season, Donald Trump promised to invest one trillion dollars in infrastructure. It’s an idea with bipartisan appeal. But as Ohio Democratic Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur points out in an interview with WVIZ/PBS’s public affairs show “Ideas,” the devil is in the details.
She says she doesn’t know how President Trump intends to define “infrastructure.”
“Is it just roads? Does it include new grid for the production of power? Port modernization?” Kaptur asked. “What about the water systems of Cleveland? What about the sewage treatment systems? What about what’s under the streets? Is infrastructure going to be a part of that? What about the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation which is so vital to our Great Lakes region? So how are they going to define it? I don’t think anyone really knows yet.”
Kaptur says she supports improvements to Michigan’s Soo Locks which connects Lake Superior to the rest of the Great Lakes. That project was listed last month in a leaked White House document of infrastructure priorities. Kaptur says she’s in talks with local elected officials in her district about their priorities.
