Search Ends For Lake Erie Airplane Crash Victims

Nick Castele

Cleveland city officials are ending the recovery search for the airplane that crashed into Lake Erie late last year.

Burke Lakefront Airport commissioner Khalid Buhhor made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.

“Due to conditions of the water, it is not likely that we’ll be able to recover additional human remains from dives at this point. This is a very difficult decision to make, and not one that was made or taken lightly,” he said.

Earlier dives recovered four sets of remains, but identities have not been released publicly.  Divers also found the cockpit voice recorder, but National Transportation Safety Board investigators haven’t yet listened to the contents.

The twin-engine Cessna took off from Burke on Dec. 29, traveling to the Ohio State University Airport. It was two miles over the lake when it disappeared from radar.
