Community Assets and Challenges

Northeast Ohio is made up of hundreds of larger and smaller cities, towns, townships and municipalities. Each has a sense of place, tradition, history and culture cherished by its residents.  Although distinct, these communities share many of the same concerns, including jobs and the economy, education, environmental issues, crime and politics. These and other perennial challenges are often seen as “unfixable” in the minds of citizens, and there are limited mechanisms for sharing or collaborating on solutions.

ideastream conducts an ongoing community engagement process, the Listening Project: Listening to Community/Looking for What Matters. Over more than a decade The Listening Project has revealed common areas of pride about community assets relating to people and place as well as concerns and issues about race, politics, the economy, and the environment issues.  Groundbreaking work like “The Quiet Crisis,” done in collaboration with The Plain Dealer, highlights the region’s shared assets and challenges and mobilizes communities, governments and civic organizations to work together to make the region a better place to live and work. The ideastream Campaign for Community is enabling the extension of the impact of this work. The news and information resources of ideastream are being strengthened by doubling the number of producers, reporters, hosts, editors and technical support personnel, which will:

  • Increase reports on radio, television and the web, including increasing the number of local newscasts on 90.3 WCPN by one third
  • Develop a unique family of companion radio, television, web and community engagement efforts, including:
    • A new daily Ideas program on WVIZ/PBS
    • The Sound of Ideas® on 90.3 WCPN
    • Ideas Now 24/7 on the web, social media and mobile platforms
  • Combine all ideastream efforts with a focused community engagement process to create a powerful multiple media effort to advance the region
