The candidates:

(1) Otis, a brown bear estimated to be about 25 years old, was crowned earlier this month as the winner of the annual Fat Bear Week at the Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska;

(2) The firefighters in Medway, Mass., who rescued a calf that fell into a 20-foot-deep well;

(3) The man in Britain who came upon a 20-inch-long North American snapping turtle while walking along the River Trent in Burton-on-Trent. He took it home and put it in his bathtub until someone from the RSPCA arrived. The animal rescue officer, noting that the turtle was big and aggressive, named him "Hagar";

(4) The vegetarian crocodile Babiya, who has lived in a pond outside a temple in the Indian state of Kerala for 70 years
