Northeast Ohio U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan says he’ll challenge Rep. Nancy Pelosi for her seat as House minority leader.
“What we are doing right now is not working,” Ryan wrote in a letter to his Democratic colleagues in the House.
He continued: “At this time of fear and disillusionment, we owe it to our constituencies to listen and bring a new voice into leadership.” Ryan wrote that Democrats should work for “a multicultural, progressive, and innovative country that fights every day for ordinary people.”
Ryan is from Niles, Ohio, and his district includes Youngstown, Warren and parts of Akron. The district passes through Portage and Trumbull counties and touches part of Stark County. All three counties were won by President Obama in 2012 and by Donald Trump this year.
If elected House minority leader, Ryan pledged to take his party back into the majority.
The leadership vote is scheduled for Nov. 30.
