Former President Bill Clinton campaigned on Wednesday for his wife and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Canton at an ironworkers’ union training facility.
The rally concluded two days of events in Ohio. Bill Clinton campaigned in the Mahoning Valley, in Steubenville, at Ohio University and in Canton.
He carried much of eastern Ohio when he ran for president, but many of those counties turned Donald Trump’s way in the GOP primary this year.
Clinton said people have a right to be angry when they feel invisible, but he suggested Trump offered the wrong solutions for struggling communities in Ohio.
“I mean they’re good at rubbing salt in your wounds, aren’t they?” he said. “‘Let’s make America great again.’ That means, ‘I’ll give you the economy you had 50 years ago.’”
He said Hillary Clinton would help make student debt less burdensome, and he said the country needs an infrastructure program to fix roads, bridges and water lines.
“Hillary won’t promise to give somebody yesterday’s economy,” he said. “But she will promise to give everyone a fair chance in tomorrow’s economy, and that’s what we have to do in America.”
Early voting begins October 12, and the Ohio campaign visits are picking up.
Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence plans trips to Strongsville and Rossford this Friday. Donald Trump will hold a rally in Cincinnati next week.
President Obama plans to campaign for Clinton next week in Columbus and the Cleveland area.
