Gov. John Kasich has vetoed a controversial election bill over a provision that would have required voters to post a cash bond if they want a court to order polling places to stay open late. From our Statehouse Bureau, Jo Ingles reports:
The sponsor of the bill, Republican Senator Bill Seitz, is not happy.
“The Governor has subordinated the interests of Ohio taxpayers and poll workers to the interest of those who want to game Election Day voting hours for political purposes.”
But Ohio Democratic Party Chair David Pepper is praising Kasich’s veto.
“This thing amounted to nothing more than an enormous poll tax and I’m glad the Governor saw fit to veto it.”
The Ohio Legislature won’t be back before the November election so they won’t be able to pass anything that would change the process for keeping polls open longer hours.
