Many poll watchers last night were eager to see how Senator Bernie Sanders would fare among urban African-American voters in the Democratic presidential primary.
Sanders had beat rival Hillary Clinton in Michigan's primary.
Michael Nelson is the head of the NAACP chapter in Cleveland. He says while Sanders had enthusiastic supporters, Clinton activated a political machine:
“Well, you know in Ohio, we have a traditional political structure. In the African-American community, there is a strong relationship between the voter and African-American elected officials. Most African-American elected officials are committed to Hillary Clinton, which means that the ‘machine’ was working in Ohio. Now, with all due to respect to Mr. Sanders’ campaign and Senator Sanders, he did have a diverse group of younger people. Very enthusiastic. So it was a contest between enthusiasm and the machine. And the machine seemed to carry it today,” Nelson said.
Clinton won four of five contests last night.
