Energy is expected to play a role in tomorrow's GOP debate in Cleveland. Republican hopefuls have, in the past, tended to focus on loosening drilling regulations as part of their energy plans. But some environmental groups hope for something more. Statehouse reporter Andy Chow explains.
The oil and gas industry backed American Petroleum Institute is calling on Republican presidential candidates to support drilling on federal lands and offshore resources.
But Trent Dougherty from the Ohio Environmental Council has a different take. Not only is he against lifting regulations, but he says the conversation should focus on paving the way for what he calls a clean energy economy.
"That discussion has not been made over the past handful of presidential campaigns and to the degree that we can make that be front and center we can also bring in front and center the environmental impacts of some of these energy choices and the environmental benefits of others," said Dougherty.
Energy and the environment are expected to play some type of role in the debate since President Barack Obama released his Clean Energy Plan earlier this week.
