Local officials are advising beachgoers not to swim at several Northeast Ohio beaches because of high e coli levels in the water.
A few days of heavy rainfall caused combined sewer and storm overflow drains to discharge raw sewage into Lake Erie.
Jeannie Chapman with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District says that includes one discharge point at Edgewater beach on Cleveland's west side.
"We have 120 discharge points throughout the entire service area within the sewer district," Chapman said. "So there are discharge points that overflow every time it rains. For the Edgewater Beach overflow, that discharges very infrequently. And for 2015, this is the first time it's gone off.
To the west, there are swimming advisories posted for Edgewater, as well as Huntington beach in Bay Village and Vermillion beach. On the east side of Cleveland, there's an advisory for Villa Angela beach.
