Long-time Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic issued a letter of resignation today.

In the letter, Plusquellic said he is – quote -- "done fighting this madness" -- referring to a dispute with city councilman Bob Hoch .

Hoch was uninvited from the State of the City address this year.  The mayor's spokesperson later suggested Plusquellic believed Councilman Hoch might shoot him.

An e-mail from the city said Plusquellic would not be making any other statements, nor will he do tv or radio interviews.

His longtime deputy mayor Dave Lieberth called him the city's most successful mayor;  "Don Plusquellic has changed the face of the city, the downtown and our economy and he’s responsible more than any other person for the city being nationally recognized for being one of the true legacy cities that’s been able to get past its rust belt history and forge the new economy the Brookings Institute has called one of the most successful American cities."

Plusquellic has been mayor of Akron since 1987.  His resignation takes effect May 31 st.

He’ll be replaced by Akron Council President Gary Moneypenny.
