Cleveland police say they've arrested a man in connection with a quintuple homicide that hit the city's southeast side last November. ideastream's Nick Castele has more.
A gunman killed two teenagers and a 60-year-old man inside a home before fatally shooting a pregnant mother in a car just outside, police say. A 9-year-old girl survived being grazed in the chest by a bullet. Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams called the act "one of the most heinous crimes that have happened in our city in recent memory."
While police hailed the arrest as an early step forward in a complex case, Deputy Chief Ed Tomba could not yet say if the suspect was believed to be the gunman. He said investigators were still gathering and processing evidence.
Police took the man into custody on the west side Wednesday morning, Tomba said. Detectives and prosecutors were interviewing the suspect as police executed search warrants, he said. Tomba said he expects the man will be charged this week, but did not elaborate.
Officers made progress in the case while receiving dozens of tips from residents, Williams said.
"A lot of people talk about assistance of our community and how they assist or don't," Williams said. "But I'd like to tell you, our community stepped forward and were instrumental in making this happen."
