Same-Sex Marriage Could Benefit Ohio's Economy, Study Finds

Wedding-related spending by couples and their guests would total almost $71 million in the first three years, according to the report by the Williams Institute, a UCLA-based think tank specializing in LGBT issues. That would bring in $5 million in sales tax revenue to Ohio’s state and local governments.

The report also found several hundred jobs could be created – perhaps close to 900.

The think tank says it relied on Census data showing Ohio has about 20,000 same-sex couples. It estimated half of them would marry in the first three years after legalization.

Much of that economic activity would happen in the first year.
