The watchdog organization PIRG – the Ohio Public Interest Research Group – says its annual toy safety survey turned up some items of concern.
The organization’s search found toys on store shelves with high levels of toxic substances. PIRG also found toys with small parts even though they were marked for children under the age of three, and toys that could potentially harm children’s hearing.
Program Associate Bryan Stewart says this report is only an example of the dangers that are out there.
“These are some hazardous toys, but it’s not all of them," Steward said. "There’s a lot more hazardous toys out on the shelves, and it’s up to them to read the labels and look out about their purchases and read the age recommendations.”
PIRG is also calling on policymakers to look at the report and consider tighter oversight and regulation on these products.
