Castro has been indicted on a total of 977 counts -- including 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, as well as counts of gross sexual imposition, felonious assault, child endangerment and possessing of criminal tools.
Castro was already facing hundreds of charges from an earlier indictment, including two counts of aggravated murder for allegedly causing one of the women to miscarry a pregnancy. There were no additional murder counts in this indictment.
"Today’s indictment moves us closer to resolution of this gruesome case," Prosecutor Timothy McGinty wrote in a press release. "Our investigation continues, as does our preparation for trial."
According to the press release, McGinty's office is still reviewing whether to seek the death penalty against Castro in connection with the aggravated murder charge.
Craig Weintraub, one of Castro's defense attorneys, wrote in an email that he was pleased prosecutors hadn't sought death in this indictment.
"It is our hope that we can continue to work toward a resolution of this matter so that the women do not have to endure any additional trauma," he wrote.
Castro pleaded not guilty to the original charges, which covered roughly half of the time the women were missing. This latest indictment covers the full span of years.
Castro is scheduled to be arraigned on the new indictment July 17, with his trial date still tentatively set for Aug. 5.
